Can Scratched Glass Be Repaired?
Sometimes — and the deciding factors are depth, glass type and where the scratch sits.
Light surface scratches can often be polished out; deeper ones generally cannot, and scratches on tempered glass are usually a replacement case. The practical test is your fingernail: if it catches in the scratch, the damage is too deep to polish safely. Polishing removes material, and taking too much creates visible optical distortion worse than the original mark.
Tempered glass is the important exception. Its strength comes from a compressed surface layer, and grinding into that layer weakens the panel — so scratches on shower doors, patio doors and storefront glass are normally replaced rather than polished.

Why Depth Decides Everything
Polishing glass is not filling a scratch; it is removing the glass around it until the surface is level again. That works beautifully when the scratch is shallow, because only a whisper of material has to come off. It fails when the scratch is deep, because levelling to the bottom of it means removing enough glass to create a shallow dish.
A dish in a flat pane behaves like a weak lens. Straight lines bend as you move past it, reflections warp, and the eye picks it up immediately, especially on a window where you see the outside world through it. Plenty of people who paid to have a scratch removed ended up with a distortion they notice more than the scratch.
Hence the fingernail test. Run a nail lightly across the mark: if it glides over, the scratch is likely within polishing range. If it catches or drops into a groove, it is too deep, and any honest glazier will tell you replacement is the better outcome.
Why Tempered Glass Is Treated Differently
Tempered glass gets its strength from a permanently compressed outer layer over a tensioned core. That surface layer is the structural feature, not just a finish. Grinding into it locally reduces the compression that is holding the panel's stored energy in balance.
In practice that means a polished tempered panel may look fine and be measurably more likely to fail later, potentially without warning. Since tempered glass fails completely rather than cracking, that is not a risk worth taking on a shower enclosure, a patio door or a storefront.

What Causes Scratched Glass in the First Place
Knowing the source matters, because most scratched glass we see was damaged by something entirely preventable and likely to happen again:
- Construction and cleaning debris. Grit trapped under a squeegee or cloth is the single most common cause, and it scratches in long arcs.
- Razor blades and scrapers. Used to remove paint, stickers or hard water deposits, especially on tempered glass where they should never be used dry.
- Abrasive cleaning pads. Anything more aggressive than a soft cloth, including many so-called non-scratch scourers.
- Rings and watches. Frequent on shower doors and low windows, usually producing short isolated marks.
- Pets. Claws on patio door glass, generally in the lower portion of the panel.
- Hard water and mineral etching. Not technically a scratch, but often reported as one, and genuinely not polishable.
If a cleaning contractor scratched your glass, document it before anything is touched. Photograph the panel and the marks, note the date and who was on site. Scratched glass from construction cleaning is a common commercial dispute, and replacement of a large storefront lite is not a small number.

What people ask before deciding to polish or replace.
Do those DIY scratch removal kits work?
On very light surface marks, sometimes. On anything a fingernail catches, they generally make matters worse, because the compound removes glass unevenly by hand and produces a hazy dished area around the original scratch. That haze is harder to live with than the scratch, and it cannot be undone. If the panel is expensive — a storefront lite, a large window — it is worth an assessment first.
Can hard water etching be polished off?
Usually not meaningfully. Mineral deposits that have sat on glass for years chemically etch the surface across a broad area rather than in a line, so there is no single scratch to level out — the whole surface has been attacked. Aggressive polishing of a large etched area almost always produces visible distortion. On shower glass, replacement with a coated panel is generally the better outcome.
The scratch is on the inside of my double-pane window. Can you reach it?
Not without replacing the unit. If the mark is on one of the two internal surfaces inside the sealed cavity, there is no access to it — the unit is bonded shut and cannot be opened. Since the two panes cannot be separated, the whole insulated unit would be replaced. Worth checking carefully which surface it is on before assuming, since internal marks are often actually seal failure.
Is a scratch on tempered glass dangerous?
It depends on depth and location, and edges are the concern. A light surface scratch in the middle of a panel is generally not a structural issue. A deeper scratch, and particularly any chip or nick at an edge or corner, breaches the compressed layer at its most vulnerable point and is a genuine failure risk — that is one of the main causes of shower doors shattering apparently spontaneously.
Will insurance cover scratched glass?
Sometimes, depending on cause and policy. Accidental damage from a specific incident is more likely to be covered than gradual wear or damage from cleaning. Commercial policies vary widely. Where a contractor caused it, the more productive route is usually their liability insurance rather than yours. We provide itemized documentation and photographs for either.
How do I stop it happening again?
Mostly by changing how the glass is cleaned. Rinse loose grit off before wiping anything across the surface, use a clean soft cloth or a squeegee with an undamaged rubber, and keep razor blades and abrasive pads away from tempered glass entirely. For commercial property, it is worth specifying in your cleaning contract that blades are not to be used on glazing.
