Why Is One Room Always Hotter Than the Rest?

The Short Answer

In North Texas it is almost always west-facing glass. A room with west-facing windows takes low, direct afternoon sun through the hottest hours of the day, and glass converts that radiation into heat inside the room faster than a residential HVAC system can remove it. The problem is solar gain through the window, not a failure of your air conditioning.

Which is why interior blinds and curtains disappoint. By the time sunlight reaches them it has already passed through the glass and become heat inside the room. The only effective place to stop it is outside the window.

Why West-Facing Glass Is So Punishing Here

Two things combine. First, the sun sits low in the western sky through the afternoon, so its rays strike a vertical window almost head-on rather than glancing off it. A west window receives far more direct radiation per square foot in late afternoon than a south window does at noon.

Second, timing. That exposure peaks in the late afternoon, when the building fabric has already absorbed heat all day, outdoor temperatures are at their highest, and your air conditioning is already running near capacity. The room receives its heaviest solar load at the exact moment the system has the least spare capacity to deal with it.

In DFW that pattern runs from late spring into October. It is why so many houses have one room — usually a west-facing living room, home office or primary bedroom — that is comfortable all morning and unusable from mid-afternoon.

Why Blinds, Curtains and Interior Film Underperform

This is the part that frustrates people most, because they have usually already tried it. Interior treatments sit on the wrong side of the glass. Sunlight passes through the window, is absorbed by the blind or curtain, and re-radiates as heat — inside the room. The energy is already in the building.

Blinds do help with glare and privacy, and blackout curtains reduce the direct beam. But as a heat-rejection strategy they are working after the event, and that is why closing them makes a room dark without making it much cooler.

Ruling Out the Other Causes First

Glass is the most common cause but not the only one, and it is worth eliminating the cheap possibilities before spending anything:

  • Check the supply vent. If air is barely moving from the register in that room, the problem may be duct sizing, a crushed flex duct or a closed damper rather than the window.
  • Check the return. A room with supply air but no return path pressurises and stops circulating properly. Leaving the door open can be diagnostic.
  • Check above the ceiling. A room under a poorly insulated attic — particularly a bonus room over a garage — gains heat through the ceiling as well as the window.
  • Count the exterior walls. A corner room with two exposed walls and glass on both has considerably more load than an interior room.
  • Note the timing. Hot from mid-afternoon onward points strongly at west glass. Hot all day points more toward insulation or airflow.

The timing test is the most diagnostic thing you can do, and it is free. If the room is fine at 10am and intolerable at 5pm, the cause is solar gain through glazing. If it is uniformly warm from morning onward, look at insulation and duct work first — we will tell you that rather than sell you screens.

Do solar screens really make a noticeable difference?

Yes, and on a west-facing room the change is usually obvious rather than subtle. Solar screens prevent 80% to 90% of the heat produced by the sun's rays and block 65% to 90% of UV radiation, and because they sit outside the glass that energy never enters the room at all. The common report from customers is that a room which was unusable after 3pm becomes ordinary.

Will screens make the room dark?

Dimmer, not dark. The effect from inside is closer to good sunglasses than to a blind, and you still see out clearly during daylight. Because screens are specified per room rather than one option for a whole house, if a particular room's brightness matters to you, say so — we can adjust the specification or leave that window unscreened.

I already have low-E windows. Will screens still help?

Less than on single-glazed or clear glass, and we would rather say so upfront. Low-E already does part of the solar control job, which is the situation in most housing built across Frisco, McKinney and north Plano in recent decades. That said, on a west elevation taking direct afternoon sun, screens still make a noticeable difference over low-E — particularly on large great-room glazing.

Is it cheaper to fix the room or upsize the air conditioning?

Fixing the glass, almost always, and the logic is worth following. Upsizing HVAC means capital cost plus permanently higher running cost to remove heat that keeps arriving. Stopping the heat at the window is a one-off cost that reduces the load instead. Oversized systems also short-cycle, which worsens humidity control — a real consideration in our climate.

Which windows should I do if I can't afford all of them?

West-facing first, without much doubt — that is where the afternoon load arrives. South-facing second. East gets morning sun only and is optional depending on how you use the room. North rarely justifies it. Doing just west and south glass typically captures most of the benefit for well under half the cost of treating a whole property.

Will my HOA allow solar screens?

Many do, but plenty specify frame colors, fabric colors or which elevations may be screened, and that is common in the master-planned communities across Frisco, McKinney and west Plano. Check your architectural guidelines before ordering, since screens are custom-made to your openings and not returnable. Where screens are not permitted, solar-control glass achieves a similar result with no change to the exterior appearance.
