Notice that none of these are negotiable levers a salesperson controls. They are physical properties of your job. Glass is not pulled off a shelf in standard sizes — it is cut, finished and in most cases tempered or assembled specifically for your opening, which is why there is no catalogue price to quote from. An honest number requires someone to measure, and a firm price offered over the phone beforehand should make you cautious.
Relative Costs, Cheapest to Most Expensive
Without inventing numbers that would not apply to your specific job, here is the reliable ordering of common residential and commercial glass work:
- Hardware repairs. Sliding door rollers, latch alignment, weatherstripping. The cheapest thing we do, and frequently the fix for symptoms people assume need replacement.
- Weep hole clearing and sealant renewal. Leak repairs where no glass is replaced at all.
- Single-pane re-glazing. Clear annealed glass in an existing sash. The cheapest actual glass replacement.
- Standard insulated unit replacement. The typical foggy-window job. Moderate, and dramatically below a full window replacement.
- Tempered panel replacement. Shower doors and patio door panels. Higher, because tempered glass must be cut and finished before tempering.
- Low-E, laminated and specialty units. Higher again, with longer lead times.
- Oversized and high-access glazing. Two-storey entry glass, great-room windows, commercial storefront lites at height. The top of the range.
The comparison that matters most: glass replacement versus full window replacement. Replacing a failed insulated unit within your existing frame is a fraction of the cost of a new window, needs no exterior work and no repainting. If you have been quoted a window for a fogged pane, get a glazier's quote before deciding.
How to Compare Quotes Without Getting Caught Out
Glass quotes are easy to compare badly, because two numbers can describe genuinely different scopes of work. Before you compare, make sure each quote answers these:
- What exactly is being replaced? The glass unit only, the sash, or the whole window. These are wildly different jobs.
- What glass specification? Tempered or annealed, insulated or single, low-E or clear. A cheaper quote is often a lower specification.
- Does it include removal and disposal? Old glass has to go somewhere, and broken tempered glass is hazardous to handle.
- Is a board-up included? If the opening is broken, temporary securing is real work and should be stated.
- What is the lead time? A cheaper quote with a four-week lead may not be the better deal.
- Is there a warranty? On both the glass and the installation.
One more: check that the contractor is licensed, bonded and insured, and for commercial work that they can issue a certificate of insurance naming your entity. An uninsured contractor working at height on your property is a risk that does not show up in the quoted price.

Why won't you quote a price over the phone?
Because any number given before seeing the opening is a guess, and guesses go wrong in both directions. We would either quote high to protect ourselves, or quote low and have to revise it once we arrive — and neither is fair to you. Measuring takes a few minutes, the estimate is free, and you get a number you can actually rely on and compare.
Is it cheaper to do several windows at once?
Per window, yes, noticeably. A large part of any job is mobilization — getting a technician and materials to your property. That cost is the same whether we replace one unit or five, so spreading it across several openings lowers the per-window price. If you have found two or three failed units, doing them together is worth it. Replacing sound glass early is not.
Does emergency service cost more?
After-hours and emergency response does carry a premium, because it means crew and vehicles outside normal scheduling. But it is worth separating two things: the board-up that secures your property tonight, and the permanent glazing that happens once the glass is made. The urgent part is usually the smaller part, and leaving a building open overnight costs far more than the callout.
Is cheaper glass a false economy?
Sometimes, and it is worth understanding where. On a standard clear pane, glass is glass. On insulated units the difference is real — a cheaper unit with a poorer edge seal will fog years earlier, so you pay twice. On tempered and laminated glass, specification is a safety matter rather than a quality preference. We quote what the application actually requires.
Will you match a competitor's price?
We would rather show you why the quotes differ. Very often a lower number is a lower specification — annealed instead of tempered, single instead of insulated, or disposal and board-up excluded. Occasionally it is simply a keener price and we will say so. What we will not do is match a number by quietly dropping to a specification the opening should not have.
