Solar Screens, Film or New Windows?
Three solutions to the same problem, separated by a wide cost gap — and the most expensive one is frequently not the answer.
For solar heat, exterior screens generally give the most benefit per dollar; low-E glass is the best option where appearance or an HOA rules screens out; window film is the cheapest but least effective; and full window replacement is rarely justified on energy grounds alone if your frames are sound. The deciding factors are where the treatment sits relative to the glass, and whether anything is already being replaced.
We fit glass for a living, so it is worth being explicit: we will tell you when screens beat the glass work we could otherwise sell you. That is usually the honest answer.

The physical principle underlying the whole table: anything on the outside of the glass stops energy before it enters the building. Anything on the inside is dealing with heat that has already arrived. That single fact explains most of the performance difference.
When Each One Is the Right Answer
Choose solar screens when your existing glass is sound and a specific room is unusable in the afternoon. This is the most common situation we see, and screens on the west elevation solve it for a fraction of any glass-based approach. If your HOA permits them, this is usually where to start.
Choose low-E glass when a unit is being replaced anyway — a fogged seal, a hail crack — because the labor is already committed and the coating is a modest incremental cost. Also choose it when screens are not permitted or not wanted, since low-E is invisible from outside.
Consider film when budget is the binding constraint and screens are not allowed. Be aware of the trade-offs: it is less effective than exterior treatment, it can increase thermal stress on the glass, and many insulated unit warranties are voided by applying film. Check your warranty before proceeding.
Choose full window replacement when the windows themselves have failed — rotted or corroded frames, sashes that no longer operate, units beyond repair. That is a legitimate reason. Replacing sound windows to reduce cooling costs is not, on the numbers, and any company presenting it as an energy investment should be asked to show the payback.
The comparison worth insisting on: if you have been quoted full window replacement for a hot room, get a screen quote and a glass quote alongside it. The gap is usually large, and the performance difference is far smaller than the price difference implies.
Combining Them
These are not mutually exclusive, and the most cost-effective outcome is frequently a combination rather than one approach applied everywhere:
- Screens on west glass, nothing on north. Concentrates the spend where the heat actually arrives.
- Low-E on units being replaced, screens on the rest. Upgrade opportunistically rather than replacing sound glass.
- Laminated on the road-facing elevation, screens on the sunny one. Different problems, different solutions, applied where each belongs.
- Screens plus attention to insulation and ductwork. If a room is hot all day rather than only from mid-afternoon, glazing may not be the main cause at all.
That last point matters. If a room is uniformly warm from morning onward, the problem is more likely insulation or airflow than solar gain, and screens will disappoint. We will tell you that rather than sell you screens — the timing test is the free diagnostic that separates the two.

Is window film a bad idea?
Not bad, but oversold, and there are two specific cautions. It sits inside the glass, so some solar energy has already entered the room before the film acts on it. And applying film to an insulated unit can increase thermal stress on the pane and voids many manufacturer warranties. Check your warranty first. Where budget is tight and screens are not permitted, it is still better than nothing.
Will new windows pay for themselves in energy savings?
Rarely, on energy alone, and it is worth pushing back on anyone who claims otherwise. Payback periods on full window replacement are typically long, and are frequently presented using optimistic assumptions. New windows are worth it when the existing windows have genuinely failed — rot, corrosion, sashes that no longer operate — or for comfort, noise and appearance. Those are honest reasons.
Which is best if I can only do one thing?
Exterior solar screens on your west-facing glass, in most cases. That combination targets the elevation delivering the most heat at the worst time of day, at the lowest cost of any effective option. If screens are not permitted where you live, low-E replacement on the same windows is the alternative — more expensive, but invisible from the street.
Do screens or film work better for glare?
Both help, and screens generally do more because they reduce the light before it enters. For a home office or a television room facing west, screens usually resolve the problem outright. Film is a reasonable choice where screens are restricted and glare rather than heat is the main complaint, since the interior position matters less for glare than it does for heat.
I have a two-storey entry that's always hot. What do you recommend?
That is a common DFW problem and worth assessing rather than guessing. Two-storey entry glazing is large, usually unshaded and often west or south-facing, and the heat collects at the top of the space. Screens are effective but access for installation and later cleaning matters. Low-E replacement is invisible and permanent but costs more. We would look at it before recommending either.
