How Hail Actually Damages Glass
A large hailstone hitting a window straight on can break it immediately, and that damage is self-announcing. The subtler and more common outcome is a smaller stone, or a glancing impact, that chips the surface or nicks an edge without breaking through.
That matters because glass carries stress. A chip is a stress concentrator, and with every subsequent thermal cycle — hot afternoon, cool night, a Texas specialty — the flaw works a little further. Weeks later a crack appears to arrive from nowhere, and the homeowner has no idea it traces back to a storm that has since dropped out of the claim window.
Insulated units add a further complication. A hailstone can crack only the outer lite while the inner lite stays intact, so the window still looks serviceable from inside. But the seal is compromised, and within months you get fogging — which then looks like ordinary seal failure rather than storm damage, and is treated very differently by an insurer.
What to Check After a Storm
Walk the property within a few days while any claim is still live. It takes twenty minutes:
- Look along the glass, not through it. Stand at an angle so light rakes across the surface. Chips and pits that are invisible head-on show up immediately.
- Check west and south elevations first. Storm cells in North Texas commonly drive from the west and southwest, and those faces take the brunt.
- Inspect the edges and corners of each pane. Edge damage is the most likely to propagate into a full crack later.
- Do not forget skylights. They face straight up, take the full impact, and are the single most hail-vulnerable glazing on a house.
- Check patio doors and sunroom glazing. Large areas of exposed glass, often overlooked because they are not thought of as windows.
- Look at screens and solar screens. Torn mesh and dented frames are damage in their own right, and a useful indicator of impact severity at that elevation.
- Photograph everything you find, dated. Storm claims are checked against recorded weather events for your address.
If your roof is being inspected, ask the adjuster to look at the glazing too. Window damage is frequently omitted from North Texas storm claims simply because nobody raised it, and adding it later once a claim has settled is considerably harder.

Whether a carrier accepts a delayed claim depends on the policy and the evidence, which is exactly why photographing the property immediately after a storm is worth twenty minutes even if nothing looks broken.
Can hail break a double-pane window?
Yes, and it often breaks only the outer lite. The inner lite stays intact so the window still looks fine from inside, but the sealed unit is compromised. Fogging typically appears within months, at which point it resembles ordinary seal failure and is treated as gradual deterioration rather than storm damage. Checking the outer surface after a storm is the way to catch this.
Is laminated glass worth the extra cost in DFW?
On exposed elevations, and especially after a repeat claim, it is worth pricing seriously. The value is in the failure mode: laminated glass cracks but stays in the frame rather than shattering and leaving your house open while the storm is still going. It also blocks most UV and reduces noise. It costs more than standard glass, so it makes most sense on west and south glazing rather than everywhere.
Should I claim for one cracked window?
Check the repair cost against your deductible first — and in Texas, note that many policies carry a separate, higher wind and hail deductible, sometimes calculated as a percentage of the dwelling value. It is worth it. Roofing contractors are assessing roofs, and chips or edge damage in glazing are easy to miss from a ladder, particularly the shallow surface pitting that only shows when light rakes across the pane at an angle. A glazier looks at glass differently. If your roof took a hit, the glass on the same elevation very likely took one too.
Do solar screens protect windows from hail?
Partially, and it is a genuine secondary benefit rather than their purpose. The mesh absorbs and deflects some smaller impacts before they reach the glass. It will not stop a large stone, and the screen itself may be damaged doing it. Treat it as a modest bonus alongside the real benefits — blocking 80 to 90 percent of solar heat and 65 to 90 percent of UV.
