How Long Does Replacement Glass Take?
Almost all of the waiting is fabrication, not scheduling — and there are good physical reasons it cannot be compressed.
Most replacement glass takes one to two weeks to fabricate, while the installation itself is often under an hour. Nearly all glass is made to order: tempered glass must be cut, drilled and finished before it is tempered, because it cannot be touched afterwards, and insulated units are assembled with spacers, seals and gas fill. Broken openings are boarded the same day while the glass is made.
Simple clear glass in a common size is the exception and can sometimes be done within a few business days. Oversized, laminated, coated and specialty glass runs longer.

Why Glass Cannot Simply Be Cut on Site
Ordinary annealed glass can be cut, and for a simple single-pane window that is sometimes what happens. But most modern glass is not ordinary annealed glass, and the reasons it has to be factory-made are physical rather than procedural.
Tempered glass is heated and rapidly cooled to lock stress into the panel, and that process is what makes it strong. Any cutting, drilling or notching has to happen before tempering. Attempt it afterwards and the panel disintegrates. So every hole for a shower hinge, every notch for a patio door latch, every edge finish is done first, then the panel is tempered, then it is yours.
Insulated units are assemblies. Two lites are bonded to a perimeter spacer with a primary and secondary seal, and the cavity is filled with dry air or argon. That is controlled factory work, and the seals need time to cure properly before the unit can be transported and installed.
Laminated glass bonds an interlayer between two lites under heat and pressure in an autoclave. Again, factory equipment, and again, cut to size beforehand.

This is why accurate measuring matters so much. A measurement that is out by a fraction does not mean a quick adjustment — it means a scrapped panel and the entire lead time again. It is the single strongest argument against attempting tempered glass work yourself.
What Can Be Done Faster
Several things are genuinely quick, and it is worth knowing which category your job falls into before you brace for a fortnight:
- Board-up and temporary securing. Same day, 24 hours a day. This is what stops you being exposed while the glass is made.
- Hardware repairs. Sliding door rollers, latch alignment, closers and weatherstripping are typically parts we carry or can source quickly.
- Weep hole clearing and sealant renewal. Leak repairs where no glass is involved are usually a single visit.
- Single-pane re-glazing in a common size. Frequently within a few business days.
- Assessment and quoting. Free, and usually within a day or two of your call.
What genuinely cannot be rushed is the tempering furnace and the autoclave. Any company promising same-day tempered or insulated glass in a custom size is either fitting something other than what you asked for, or is about to disappoint you.

What people ask when they need it sooner.
Can't you just cut the glass on site?
For plain annealed glass in a simple frame, sometimes yes. For anything tempered, insulated or laminated, no — and not because of preference. Tempered glass cannot be cut after tempering without shattering, insulated units are factory-sealed assemblies, and laminated glass is bonded in an autoclave. The physics of the material sets the timeline, not the scheduling.
Is there a rush option?
Sometimes, depending on the glass and the supplier's current queue, and it typically carries a premium. It is worth asking, particularly for commercial property where trading is affected. But be sceptical of anyone promising same-day custom tempered or insulated glass — the tempering furnace and autoclave cannot be shortcut, and what arrives may not be what you specified.
Why did my neighbor get theirs faster?
Almost certainly a different glass type or size. A single clear pane in a standard opening is a very different proposition from a low-E insulated unit or an oversized tempered panel. Stock availability at the fabricator on a given week also varies. If you want to know specifically why yours is longer, ask us — there is always a concrete reason and we will tell you what it is.
Does the board-up stay secure for two weeks?
Yes, a properly executed board-up is built to hold for the fabrication period. It is fixed to the frame rather than the glazing, secured against entry rather than just weather, and inspected when we return. If anything about it concerns you during the wait, call us and we will come and check it rather than leaving you uneasy about your own building.
Can I get temporary glazing instead of a board?
In some situations, yes, and it is worth asking about for a retail frontage where appearance matters commercially. Temporary glazing keeps daylight and visibility while the permanent lite is fabricated. It costs more than a board and is not suitable everywhere, so we will tell you honestly whether it makes sense for your opening.
Will you tell me if the date slips?
Yes, and proactively rather than when you chase. Fabrication dates occasionally move — a panel breaks in processing, a coated substrate is out of stock. What is not acceptable is you finding out by waiting in on the wrong day. We give a firm expected date at the point of order and contact you if it changes.
