Annealed is ordinary glass that breaks into sharp shards; tempered is heat-treated to break into blunt granules; laminated has an interlayer bonded between two lites so it cracks but stays in the frame. Tempered and laminated both qualify as safety glazing and are required in code-designated hazardous locations. Annealed is fine everywhere else and costs the least.
Choosing between tempered and laminated comes down to one question: when the glass fails, do you need the opening to stay covered? If yes — security, hail, glass above head height — laminated wins.

How Each One Is Made, and Why It Matters
Annealed glass is standard float glass, cooled slowly after manufacture to relieve internal stress. It can be cut, drilled and edge-worked on site, which makes it flexible and inexpensive. It breaks into large, heavy, razor-edged shards — which is exactly why code excludes it from hazardous locations.
Tempered glass starts as annealed glass, then is heated to around 620°C and rapidly cooled. This locks the surfaces in compression and the core in tension, making it about four times stronger. All cutting and drilling must happen before that, because afterwards any breach releases the stored stress and the whole panel disintegrates into granules.
Laminated glass bonds a plastic interlayer between two lites under heat and pressure. Under impact the glass cracks but the fragments stay adhered to the interlayer, so the panel stays in the opening. It is the same principle as a car windscreen, and it is why laminated glass keeps working as a barrier after it has broken.

A common misconception: tempered glass is not “safer” than laminated in every sense. Tempered is safer to fall against. Laminated is safer where you need the opening to remain covered — during a storm, after a break-in attempt, or where glass sits above people's heads.
How to Choose in Practice
In a hazardous location you must use tempered or laminated. Elsewhere annealed is entirely legitimate and costs less. Where both safety options are permitted, these are the situations that tip the decision:
- Choose tempered for shower enclosures, sliding patio doors, glazed doors and most residential hazardous locations. It suits the hardware, handles moisture and thermal cycling well, and costs less.
- Choose laminated for frontages with break-in history — a smash-and-grab takes far longer and often fails outright.
- Choose laminated on hail-exposed elevations, so a storm does not leave your building open while it is still going.
- Choose laminated where traffic noise is the complaint — near US-75, I-30, SH-121, SH-161 or SH-360.
- Choose laminated where UV damage matters, such as period interiors with original woodwork, floors and textiles.
- Choose laminated for glass above head height, where a tempered panel emptying itself is a hazard to whoever is beneath it.
Insulated units complicate this slightly, in a useful way. An insulated unit is an assembly of two lites, and each can be a different type — so a window can pair a tempered outer lite with a laminated inner one, combining impact resistance with post-breakage retention. We specify that where the application justifies it.

Is laminated glass bulletproof?
No, and that is an important distinction. Standard laminated glass resists impact and holds together when it cracks, which defeats smash-and-grab attempts and keeps an opening covered. Genuinely bullet-resistant glazing is a different, much thicker and far more expensive product with a specific rating. If security is the concern, laminated is a substantial improvement over tempered without being ballistic.
Can I get both tempered and laminated in one window?
Yes, in an insulated unit. Because the unit is an assembly of two lites, each can be specified separately — commonly a tempered outer lite for impact resistance paired with a laminated inner lite so the opening stays covered if the outer breaks. It costs more, and it is worth it on hail-exposed or security-sensitive elevations rather than everywhere.
Why is laminated glass heavier?
Because it is genuinely two sheets of glass plus an interlayer, rather than one. That matters practically: hardware, hinges and rollers need to be rated for the weight, and handling large laminated panels usually needs more than one person and suction equipment. It is a reason laminated is less common in shower enclosures, where standard hardware is designed around tempered glass.
Does tempered glass block UV?
Not meaningfully. Tempering changes the stress state of the glass, not its optical properties, so tempered glass blocks roughly what ordinary glass does. If UV control is the goal, laminated glass is the answer — the interlayer blocks the large majority of UV — or a low-E coating, or exterior solar screens. This matters for protecting flooring, artwork, furniture and period interiors.
Which is best for noise reduction?
Laminated, clearly. The interlayer damps vibration passing through the pane, which interrupts sound transmission in a way that single-material glass does not, and it is particularly effective against low-frequency traffic drone. Tempered and annealed glass of the same thickness perform about the same acoustically. For homes near major DFW highways, laminated on the road-facing elevation is the targeted fix.
Is annealed glass ever the right choice?
Frequently, and there is no reason to over-specify. In any position code does not designate hazardous — most ordinary windows, cabinet doors, interior openings, picture framing — annealed glass is entirely appropriate and costs the least. It is also the only type that can be cut on site, which makes it the practical choice for re-glazing traditional wood sash windows.
