The Glass Does the Work — So Replace the Glass

A patio door is one of the more expensive things in a house to replace outright, and one of the cheaper things to repair properly. The frame, track and hardware are built to last decades; the glass is the part designed to come out. When a panel fogs, cracks or shatters, replacing the glass gets you a door that works and looks like new for a fraction of a complete unit. That is the single most useful thing to understand before anyone quotes you a whole new door.

Your doors are also doing more work than people realize. They let you in and out, they provide security and protection, and they contribute to the energy efficiency of the house — but only if the glass is intact and appropriate. A broken or failed panel compromises all three at once, which is why this is not a job to leave sitting. It is also not a job to attempt yourself: patio door glass is heavy, tempered, and cannot be trimmed after fabrication, so it takes specialized tools and knowledge.

McKinney gives us both single-pane and double-pane doors, which is less common now than it used to be. Most doors today are double-pane, and that is what we find across Stonebridge Ranch, Craig Ranch and the newer developments west of 75 — where the usual failure is a blown seal producing the fogging call. Older properties nearer the historic district sometimes still have single-pane panels, which are easier and more cost-effective to install but do not offer the same energy efficiency. We handle both, and we will tell you honestly whether upgrading is worth it for your situation.

Expert Glass Replacement Services

Glass patio doors are a highly sought-after feature in today's homes. They provide an easy way to enter and exit the home, and they offer scenic views of your backyard. However, it is possible for the glass to need repair, which means you'll have to schedule a McKinney sliding glass door replacement. But this is far cheaper than replacing the whole door.

Blade Glazing offers glass replacements for doors, windows, shower doors and more. You can trust us to handle your sliding glass door replacement in McKinney TX with the utmost skill and precision.

Expert Glass Replacement Services

You rely on your sliding glass doors to let you in and out of the home, plus provide security, protection, and energy efficiency. But your doors can only do this if they have the appropriate glass. If the glass is broken, your sliding patio doors can't do the job you count on them for. Fortunately, you have Blade Glazing on your side. We'll repair your glass in no time.

No matter what type of glass you have — single-pane or double-pane — we can provide you with a quick and efficient replacement. Single-pane glass panels are easier and more cost-effective to install, but they don't offer the same energy efficiency as double-pane glass. Most doors today are made from double-pane glass.

Diagnosis

What Your Sliding Door Symptom Actually Means

Worth reading before you price a whole new door — most of these are panel or hardware jobs.

What You're ExperiencingUsual Cause and Real Fix
Fog or haze between the panesFailed insulated glass seal in a double-pane panel. Panel glass replaced; frame, track and the other panel all stay in place.
Panel shattered into small piecesTempered glass doing exactly what it should. Replacement panel glass only — and a security risk until the opening is boarded.
Crack across the panelImpact or thermal stress. Replace promptly — a cracked door compromises both security and protection, and a crack spreads.
Door is heavy or sticksWorn or seized rollers, almost always. Hardware repair rather than replacement, and one of the cheapest fixes we do.
Door won't lock properlyWorn latch or a panel sitting at the wrong height on tired rollers. A security issue, and usually hardware rather than glass.
Noticeable draft around the panelFailed weatherstripping or seals — the energy efficiency problem a neglected door creates. Inexpensive to correct.
Single-pane door, high cooling billsSingle-pane panels do not offer the energy efficiency of double-pane. Worth pricing an upgrade while the glass is out anyway.
Frame visibly bowed or out of squareStructural, often foundation movement. The one case where full unit replacement is genuinely the right answer.

Called late night after my front door to my business was broken. They were out to me within 90 minutes to board the door. Had my door as good as new within a week with replacement glass. Good people that do good business. Highly recommend!

I am a contractor, and I work with this glass shop on a regular basis because I have a lot of clients who want to install custom shower doors. They are the ones that I use for these orders, and they are always on point. I really like the way they do business.

Common Questions

McKinney Sliding Glass Door Questions

The questions that decide whether you need a panel or a whole new door.

Is replacing the glass really cheaper than a new door?

Far cheaper, and it is the main thing worth knowing before you get quotes. A sliding door is a frame holding glass panels, and the panels are designed to be replaced. The frame, track and hardware are built to last decades. When the glass fogs, cracks or shatters, we replace the panel glass and everything else stays — and the door looks like new. Full unit replacement is genuinely necessary only when the frame itself has racked out of square.

What's the difference between single-pane and double-pane?

Energy efficiency, mainly. Single-pane glass panels are easier and more cost-effective to install, which makes them a reasonable choice on some openings. But they do not offer the same energy efficiency as double-pane, which has two lites and a sealed airspace between them. Most doors today are made from double-pane glass, and it is what we find in almost all newer McKinney housing. We replace both.

Should I upgrade from single-pane to double-pane?

Often worth it, and the moment the panel is out is the cheapest opportunity you will get. A patio door is usually the largest single piece of glass in a house, so the difference in insulation is meaningful — particularly if the door faces west and takes afternoon sun. The labor is already being paid for, so the upgrade is an incremental cost on the glass rather than a separate project. On a shaded north-facing door, the payback is longer and we will say so.

Why can't I do this myself?

Because replacing glass requires specialized tools and knowledge. Patio door glass is tempered, which means it cannot be cut, trimmed or adjusted after fabrication — if the measurement is out by a fraction, the panel is scrap. The panels are also heavy and awkward, and a mishandled tempered panel can fail suddenly and dangerously. This is one job that genuinely is not a DIY project, however capable you are otherwise.

How urgent is broken glass in a patio door?

Urgent. You rely on your sliding doors for security, protection and energy efficiency, and they can only do that with the appropriate glass in place. Broken or damaged glass compromises all three at once, and an opening that is not secure is a risk to your home and your family. We offer emergency service and can fix your glass 24 hours a day, so there is no reason to leave it sitting.

The glass shattered into thousands of pieces. Is that normal?

Yes — and it confirms the door was correctly glazed. Code requires tempered safety glass in sliding patio doors, and tempered glass is engineered to break into small blunt granules rather than long sharp shards. It looks alarming and the whole panel goes at once, but it is the safe failure mode. Keep children and pets clear and avoid pulling fragments from the frame — we will clear it safely.

My door is really hard to slide. Is that the glass?

Almost never. Heavy, sticking doors are nearly always worn or seized rollers, which is a hardware repair and one of the cheapest jobs we do. A correctly adjusted slider moves with one hand and very little effort. It is worth checking the track at the same time, because if the track is damaged, new rollers alone will wear quickly against it.

How much does it cost, and do you charge for the estimate?

Estimates are free and carry no obligation, so you can find out the cost before committing to anything. On price, we offer reasonable rates and the spread depends entirely on the fix: roller and seal service sits at the low end, a single replacement panel is moderate, and a complete multi-panel unit is substantially more. Since panel replacement is far cheaper than a whole new door, most people end up paying considerably less than they expected.
