Do I need a whole new sliding door?
Usually not, and it is worth asking before anyone quotes you one. A sliding door is a frame holding glass panels, and the panels are designed to be replaced. Full replacement is genuinely right only when the frame has racked out of square or the track is beyond repair, and we will show you the evidence rather than just telling you.
My sliding door is really hard to open. What's wrong?
Worn or seized rollers, nine times out of ten. It is a hardware repair and one of the cheapest jobs we do. The thing worth checking at the same time is the bottom track — particularly in older north and central Grand Prairie homes, where fifty or sixty years of use can wear grooves into it. New rollers running in a grooved track wear out quickly, so addressing both at once costs a little more and lasts considerably longer.
My patio door is foggy between the panes. Can it be cleaned?
No. The haze sits inside the sealed airspace between the two panes, so no amount of cleaning from either side reaches it. The insulated seal in that panel has failed and moisture has entered. We replace the panel glass while the frame, track and other panel stay exactly where they are. It is the most common sliding door call we get from newer south Grand Prairie homes, and it is far cheaper than most people expect.
My house is from the 1960s and the door is original. Worth repairing?
Often yes, and it is worth assessing rather than assuming. Aluminum frames do not rot, so the frame on a sixty-year-old Grand Prairie slider is frequently still sound while the rollers, track and glazing have all reached the end of their lives. Replacing those and getting the track true again can give you a door that runs better than it has in decades, for far less than a new unit. Where the track is worn beyond capping, we will tell you.
The glass shattered into thousands of pieces. Is that normal?
Yes — and it confirms the door was correctly glazed. Code requires tempered safety glass in sliding patio doors, and tempered glass is engineered to break into small blunt granules rather than long sharp shards. It looks alarming and the whole panel goes at once, but it is the safe failure mode. Keep children and pets clear, avoid pulling fragments from the frame, and we will clean up and secure the opening.
Should I upgrade the glass while the panel is out?
Often worth considering. A patio door is usually the largest single piece of glass in a house, and it typically faces the back yard — which depending on your lot can mean direct afternoon sun. Since the panel is coming out anyway, moving to insulated or low-E glass is an incremental cost rather than a separate project. On an older single-pane slider in north Grand Prairie the difference is substantial.
