What the Code Actually Says
The International Building Code and the International Residential Code both designate a set of positions as hazardous locations, where the consequences of glass breaking are severe enough that ordinary annealed glass is not permitted. Bathing areas are squarely among them.
That covers glazing in the walls enclosing showers and tubs, shower doors and enclosure panels, and glass near a tub or shower where someone could fall against it. The reasoning is straightforward: it is a room where people are wet, barefoot, moving on a slick surface and frequently not fully steady.
Compliance is verifiable rather than a matter of trust. Every piece of tempered or laminated safety glass must carry a permanent mark — etched or sandblasted into a corner, stating the manufacturer and the standard it meets. It cannot be removed, and home inspectors look for it specifically.
Why Tempered Behaves So Differently
Tempered glass is heated to around 620°C and then rapidly cooled, which locks the surfaces into compression and the core into tension. That makes it roughly four times stronger than annealed glass of the same thickness, but strength is not really the point in a bathroom.
The point is the failure mode. Annealed glass breaks into long, heavy, razor-edged shards — the classic serious glass injury. Tempered glass disintegrates into thousands of small blunt granules that mostly fall straight down. It looks dramatic and it is startling, but you can generally walk away from it.

Checking What You Already Have
If you have an older enclosure, or one fitted by a previous owner or an unknown installer, it is worth verifying. Two checks:
- Look for the mark. Check each corner of every panel, including fixed panels and returns, not just the door. It is a small etched or sandblasted logo, sometimes faint, and it is deliberately permanent.
- Try polarised sunglasses. Look at the panel through polarised lenses in daylight and rotate your head. Tempered glass usually reveals a pattern of faint dark spots or stripes — the stress signature left by the cooling jets. Annealed glass shows nothing.
If there is no mark anywhere and the polarised test shows nothing, treat it as suspect. An untempered shower panel is a real hazard and it will also be flagged the moment the house is inspected for sale.
One thing worth knowing if yours does shatter apparently spontaneously: that is a known characteristic of tempered glass, usually caused by a microscopic nickel sulfide inclusion or old edge damage. It is not evidence that the glass was wrong — if anything it confirms it was tempered.

Can I use laminated glass instead of tempered?
Laminated glass is also recognised safety glazing and is permitted in hazardous locations, so in code terms yes. In practice almost every shower enclosure uses tempered, because it suits the application better — it handles moisture and temperature cycling well, works with standard enclosure hardware, and costs less. Laminated is heavier and its exposed edges are less suited to a wet environment.
My enclosure has no mark anywhere. What should I do?
Treat it as suspect and get it looked at. Check every corner of every panel first, including fixed panels, since the mark can be faint or positioned awkwardly. If nothing turns up and polarised sunglasses show no stress pattern, the glass may well be annealed — which is a genuine hazard in a bathroom and will be flagged at any pre-sale inspection. Replacement is the only remedy.
Does the glass in the bathroom window need to be tempered too?
Often yes, depending on its position. Glass near a tub or shower where somebody could fall against it is a hazardous location, and there are dimensional thresholds involving distance from the standing or walking surface. A window across the room may not require it, while one directly beside the tub almost certainly does. We check this at the measure rather than leaving you to interpret it.
Why can't you just cut the panel down slightly on site?
Because tempered glass disintegrates if you cut, drill or grind it after tempering. The compressed surface and tensioned core are in balance, and breaching that releases the whole panel at once. This is why measuring accurately matters so much, and why every hinge hole and notch is machined before the panel goes into the furnace. There is no on-site adjustment, ever.
Is thicker glass safer?
Thickness affects rigidity rather than safety in the sense code cares about. Both 3/8″ and 1/2″ tempered break the same safe way; the difference is that 1/2″ is stiffer, which matters for wide door spans, tall panels and steam enclosures. Heavier glass also needs hardware rated for it. For most residential walk-in showers 3/8″ is the appropriate specification.
What about a glass panel over a bathtub?
Same requirement. A tub screen or an enclosure over a bath is glazing in a bathing area and must be safety glass, permanently marked. If anything the case is stronger, since climbing in and out of a tub is exactly the moment someone is most likely to lose balance and put a hand or shoulder into the panel.
