The Highest-Return Change You Can Make to an Older Bathroom
Garland has a lot of bathrooms that have never been touched. In the post-war housing across the older parts of the city, the original bathroom is often still there — compact, tiled to shoulder height, with a tub and a curtain. Swapping that curtain for glass is the single highest-return change available in that room. It costs a fraction of a remodel, it makes a small bathroom read considerably larger and brighter, and it moves the room from dated to updated in a buyer's eyes in one step.
It also solves a practical problem those bathrooms have. A curtain holds water in its folds and grows mildew, and the older plastic doors that replaced some of them warp over time until they stop sealing and let water out at the bottom. Glass does neither. It does not warp, it wipes down rather than needing washing, and a properly fitted enclosure keeps water where it belongs.
Every enclosure we install is tempered safety glass, permanently marked — code designates shower and bath glazing a hazardous location requiring it. The one thing worth knowing about older Garland bathrooms is that walls settle. A 1950s bathroom may be measurably out of plumb, which affects whether frameless is achievable without a visible tapered gap. We measure and tell you honestly before you order rather than after.

Glass and Finish Options for Garland Bathrooms
What we supply, and where each option actually makes sense.
| Option | Where It Makes Sense |
|---|---|
| Clear glass | The most popular choice — allows natural light into the bathroom and provides an elegant look. Makes a small older bathroom read considerably larger. |
| Frosted glass | Privacy for shared, guest and children's bathrooms, and much more forgiving about water spotting than clear. |
| Etched glass | Decorative privacy where you want a pattern rather than a uniform obscure finish — a feature as much as a function. |
| Tinted glass | Where the room calls for a warmer or darker tone, or to coordinate with existing fixtures and tile. |
| 3/8″ tempered frameless | The standard frameless thickness. Best suited to bathrooms where the walls are reasonably plumb — worth checking in older Garland homes. |
| Framed enclosure | Tub surrounds and older bathrooms where walls have moved. Framing absorbs the error a frameless panel would expose, and seals reliably. |
| Brushed nickel, chrome & black | The most common finishes and the easiest to coordinate with existing bathroom fixtures in a straightforward refresh. |
| Polished gold, brushed gold & bronze | Warmer finishes suited to period-style and traditional bathrooms, or where the hardware is meant to be a feature. |

Garland Shower Door Questions
What Garland homeowners ask before committing to an enclosure.
Will a glass door really make my small bathroom look bigger?
Noticeably, yes, and it is the main reason we recommend it in Garland's older housing. A curtain or an opaque plastic door puts a visual wall through the middle of the room, so your eye stops there. Clear glass lets you see the full floor area and the tile behind, and natural light moves through instead of being blocked. In a compact 1950s or 60s bathroom the difference is more dramatic than in a large modern one — and it costs a fraction of a remodel.
What glass types can I choose from?
Clear, frosted, etched and tinted. Clear is the most popular because it allows natural light in and gives an elegant look, and it is usually right if the bathroom is small. Frosted gives privacy and hides water spots better. Etched is decorative privacy — a pattern rather than a uniform finish. Tinted suits rooms where you want a warmer tone. We will talk through which suits your bathroom during the consultation.
What hardware finishes are available?
A wide range — brushed nickel, chrome, bronze, black, polished gold, brushed gold, anodized, clear anodized and bright anodized. The usual advice is to match your existing tap and towel-rail finish rather than introducing a third metal into the room. If you are replacing fixtures at the same time, do the shower glass last so the hardware can be matched to what you have actually chosen.
Can you do custom work on my existing doors?
Yes. We can do custom work on existing doors as well as building new ones from scratch, and we can often reuse sound existing frames with new glass, which costs meaningfully less than a complete new enclosure. Where the frames are corroded, warped or the door has fundamentally moved, replacement is the honest answer and we will say so rather than patching something that will fail again.
What if something goes wrong after installation?
We offer post-installation services, so if you have any problems with the doors we will come back — fixing minor issues or replacing broken parts. That matters more with shower glass than most fittings, because hinges working loose or clamps left over-torqued create stress in a tempered panel, and tempered glass does not fail gradually. Catching a loose hinge early is far cheaper than replacing a panel.
Does shower glass have to be tempered?
Yes, without exception. Code designates glazing in and around bathing areas a hazardous location requiring safety glass, and every panel must be permanently marked with the manufacturer's identification. Beyond code it is what makes the enclosure safe — tempered glass breaks into blunt granules rather than shards. Anyone offering untempered shower glass is offering something illegal and dangerous.
My bathroom is from the 1950s and the walls aren't straight. Can I still have frameless?
Sometimes, and we will tell you honestly at the measure. Frameless glass has nowhere to hide an out-of-plumb wall — if the wall leans, you get a tapered gap along the edge of the panel, and it is visible. In older Garland bathrooms that have settled, a framed or semi-frameless enclosure often looks better because the framing absorbs the error. You should hear that before ordering rather than after installation.
How much does a glass shower door cost in Garland?
It depends on the enclosure type, glass thickness, hardware finish and the size of the opening. A framed unit around an existing tub sits at the low end and is genuinely affordable. A frameless walk-in with premium hardware is considerably more.
